Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to be particularly patient with a challenging situation

I was supporting a 9-year-old pupil with autism who became overwhelmed during a mathematics lesson and began hitting the desk repeatedly. Rather than intervening immediately, I recognised this as sensory overload and calmly moved other pupils to a quieter area. I then used visual cues and counted slowly from 10 to 1 with the pupil, which we had practised previously. After 8 minutes, he was able to communicate that the classroom lights were too bright. I adjusted the lighting and he successfully completed 75% of the lesson activities, compared to his usual 40% completion rate during overwhelming episodes.
2Question

Describe how you've adapted your approach when working with different learning needs

I was assigned to support three pupils with varying needs in one afternoon session: one with dyslexia, one with ADHD, and one with speech delays. For the dyslexic pupil, I provided coloured overlays and broke instructions into 3-step chunks. The ADHD pupil received movement breaks every 15 minutes and fidget tools. For the speech-delayed child, I used picture cards and allowed extra processing time of 10 seconds before prompting. This tailored approach resulted in all three pupils completing their literacy tasks, with the dyslexic pupil achieving 85% accuracy compared to his previous 60% average.
