STAR answer examples

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to calm an anxious patient before an MRI scan

A 45-year-old patient arrived for an abdominal MRI but became extremely claustrophobic during the safety briefing, stating they'd never been in an enclosed space. I spent 10 minutes explaining the scanning process step-by-step, showed them the panic button, and arranged for their partner to remain visible through the window. I also offered headphones with their preferred music and scheduled brief 2-minute breaks every 10 minutes. The patient completed the full 35-minute examination successfully, and later thanked me for making the experience manageable. This approach reduced our MRI cancellation rate by 12% that month.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a potential safety issue during scanning

During a routine CT chest scan, I noticed the patient's medical alert bracelet mentioned a pacemaker, but this wasn't flagged on the referral form. I immediately stopped the procedure and contacted the referring clinician to confirm the pacemaker type and MRI compatibility status. Investigation revealed it was an older non-MRI compatible device that would have been dangerous in our planned follow-up MRI. I rescheduled the patient for CT-only imaging and updated our safety checklist to include mandatory jewellery inspection. This prevented a potentially serious safety incident and led to department-wide protocol improvements.
