STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you identified a fault that had been missed by another technician — how did you handle it?

Situation: A customer returned their car for the third time with an intermittent misfire that two previous technicians had cleared without root-cause resolution. Task: I was assigned the job with a brief to find a definitive fix. Action: I connected the manufacturer diagnostic system and captured live data during a 20-minute road test, which revealed a pattern of injector drop-off under load that only appeared above 3,000 rpm — a condition not replicated on a static idle test. I documented the freeze-frame data, ordered the correct injector, and completed the repair with a full road-test sign-off. Result: The fault did not recur, the customer left a five-star review, and the service manager used my diagnostic report as a training example for the wider workshop team.
2Question

Give an example of when you were under pressure to meet productivity targets during a busy workshop day — how did you prioritise your workload?

Situation: On a Monday morning, three technicians called in sick, leaving our five-bay workshop with only two of us to cover a full day's bookings including two warranty jobs with same-day manufacturer submission deadlines. Task: I needed to hit at least 100% efficiency while ensuring the warranty paperwork was completed accurately. Action: I triaged the job cards with the service adviser, front-loaded the two warranty repairs, batched the routine service work to minimise tool changes, and flagged one complex diagnostic job for rescheduling with the customer's agreement. Result: I completed 14 job cards at 108% efficiency, both warranty claims were submitted on time, and the rescheduled customer was offered a complimentary health check on their next visit.
