  • Attending legal update conferences (virtual and in-person)

Alongside your managerial duties, you will also:

  • Strong knowledge of landlord and tenant litigation (training available if required)
  • Solid understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a time when you had to manage a significant caseload across your team while maintaining quality — how did you allocate work and monitor performance?

Situation: At my previous firm, our litigation team of five inherited 80 additional possession files when a colleague departed unexpectedly, pushing the active caseload to 210 files. Task: As the most senior fee earner, I was asked to coordinate distribution and ensure no court deadlines were missed. Action: I audited every file by urgency and complexity within two days, created a shared tracking spreadsheet updated daily, and held brief 15-minute stand-ups each morning to flag risks. I also escalated three complex defended matters to a supervising partner. Result: We cleared the backlog within six weeks with zero missed court deadlines and received written commendation from the managing partner for the team's performance under pressure.
2Question

Tell me about a situation where you identified an inefficiency in a departmental process and implemented an improvement. What was the outcome?

Situation: I noticed that our team was spending approximately three hours per week manually chasing time-recording entries from fee earners, resulting in billing delays of up to 10 days. Task: As the informal process lead, I took responsibility for proposing a fix without disrupting ongoing casework. Action: I introduced a standardised end-of-day time-recording prompt within our case management system and ran a 30-minute training session for all five team members on consistent entry formatting. Result: Within eight weeks, billing delays reduced from 10 days to 3 days, and the firm recovered an additional £18,000 in previously unbilled time during the first quarter after implementation.
