1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a struggling child achieve a breakthrough

I was working with a 9-year-old boy with autism who refused to engage in maths lessons and would become distressed when numbers were presented. I recognised he had a special interest in trains, so I developed a maths programme using train timetables and ticket prices. Within 3 weeks, he was completing addition and subtraction problems independently. His confidence grew so much that he started helping other pupils with their maths work. The breakthrough came when I adapted the learning to his interests rather than forcing traditional methods.
2Question

How do you handle challenging behaviour while maintaining a positive learning environment?

I was supporting a class of 7 SEN pupils when one child with ADHD became increasingly disruptive, throwing materials and shouting. Rather than removing him, I implemented a calm-down strategy using visual cues and offered him a choice of two alternative activities. I maintained a calm voice and gave him space while ensuring other pupils felt safe. Within 10 minutes, he had chosen to join a quiet reading corner. The key was staying patient, offering choices, and not escalating the situation while protecting the learning environment for all pupils.
