STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a struggling student achieve a breakthrough

Situation: I was supporting a Year 3 student with dyslexia who was becoming increasingly frustrated with reading tasks and refusing to participate. Task: I needed to rebuild their confidence and find alternative approaches to help them access the curriculum. Action: I introduced multi-sensory learning techniques, using coloured overlays and breaking texts into smaller chunks. I also created personalised reading materials based on their interests in football. Result: Within 6 weeks, the student's reading confidence improved dramatically, with their reading age advancing by 8 months and classroom participation increasing by 70%.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour

Situation: A Year 2 student with ADHD was disrupting lessons by calling out and leaving their seat frequently, affecting the learning of 28 other students. Task: I needed to implement strategies to help them self-regulate while maintaining a positive classroom environment. Action: I worked with the class teacher to introduce a visual behaviour chart and movement breaks every 15 minutes. I also established clear, consistent boundaries with positive reinforcement for appropriate behaviour. Result: Disruptive incidents reduced by 80% over 4 weeks, and the student began completing tasks independently, improving their academic progress by 45%.
