Dear Hiring Manager,

Protocol Education's Learning Support Assistant placements across Colchester secondary schools align directly with my experience supporting students with SEN and additional learning needs at KS3 and KS4. I hold a valid enhanced DBS certificate with an active Update Service subscription and have completed safeguarding training in line with 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' guidance.

My background in working with children and young people in school settings has equipped me with practical strategies for one-to-one and small-group support, behaviour management, and building the kind of trusting relationships that help disengaged students re-engage with learning. I am experienced in collaborating closely with class teachers to deliver tailored support plans and in maintaining clear, accurate progress records.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a young person build confidence in a learning environment.

Situation: A Year 9 student I supported had severe maths anxiety and regularly refused to attempt written tasks in class. Task: My role was to help him engage with the curriculum without escalating his distress. Action: I introduced a quiet pre-lesson check-in each morning where we broke the day's objectives into three small steps. I used visual prompts and praised effort rather than outcomes. Over six weeks I gradually reduced the level of prompting. Result: By the end of term he was attempting tasks independently in 80% of lessons and his teacher reported a marked reduction in avoidance behaviour. His end-of-term report noted improved self-confidence in numeracy.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to a change in a student's needs or behaviour.

Situation: During a KS4 English lesson, a student I regularly supported arrived visibly distressed following an incident at break time. Task: I needed to manage the situation calmly without disrupting the rest of the class. Action: I quietly moved alongside her, offered a brief grounding exercise we had practised previously, and signalled to the class teacher that I would step out briefly. I accompanied her to the pastoral office, documented the disclosure, and informed the designated safeguarding lead within 10 minutes. Result: The student was supported appropriately, the lesson continued with minimal disruption, and the safeguarding team commended the swift, correct escalation process.
