STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you exceeded sales targets consistently

Situation: In my previous role, our team was struggling to meet quarterly targets, with most colleagues achieving only 85% of their goals. Task: I needed to not only meet my own targets but help improve overall team performance. Action: I implemented a systematic approach to customer follow-ups, scheduling weekly check-ins with my top 20 clients and identifying upselling opportunities. I also started tracking customer buying patterns to predict their needs better. Result: Over the following 6 months, I achieved 125% of my targets consistently, generating £180,000 in additional revenue, and my approach was adopted team-wide, lifting overall performance to 105% of targets.
2Question

Describe a situation where you built a strong relationship with a difficult customer

Situation: I inherited a major trade customer who had complained about poor service and was threatening to switch suppliers after 3 years of business worth £50,000 annually. Task: I needed to rebuild trust and retain this valuable relationship. Action: I scheduled a face-to-face meeting within 48 hours, listened to their specific concerns about delivery delays and communication gaps, then implemented a personalised service plan with weekly progress updates and priority delivery scheduling. I also provided my direct mobile number for urgent issues. Result: Within 3 months, their satisfaction scores improved from 3/10 to 9/10, they increased their order volume by 40%, and they referred 2 new customers worth £25,000 combined.
