STAR answer examples

1Question

Tell me about a time you exceeded a sales target. What strategies did you use?

In my previous role, I was tasked with achieving £45,000 in monthly sales but consistently delivered £58,000. I focused on building genuine relationships with 12 key accounts, conducting weekly check-ins and understanding their specific needs. I also implemented a follow-up system for quotes, converting 68% compared to the team average of 42%. By the quarter end, I had exceeded my target by 29% and was recognised as top performer. This approach taught me that consistent relationship building and systematic follow-up are crucial for sustained sales success.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build a relationship with a difficult customer

I inherited an account where the customer had complained about previous service delays and was considering switching suppliers. I arranged a face-to-face meeting within 48 hours and listened to their concerns about delivery schedules affecting their project timelines. I implemented weekly progress updates and negotiated priority delivery slots for their urgent orders. Over 6 months, I rebuilt their confidence, resulting in a 40% increase in their order value from £8,000 to £11,200 monthly. This experience showed me that proactive communication and reliability are key to turning difficult relationships around.
