Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Highlight your experience managing global IT teams (UK, US, Europe) near the top of your CV — the advert explicitly lists this as a core requirement.

2

📊 Quantify your vendor management experience: e.g. 'Managed 4 third-party IT service providers across 3 regions, reducing SLA breaches by 25%.'

3

🌐 Call out Azure and/or Office 365 administration explicitly in your skills section — the advert flags these as beneficial and they are key ATS filters.

4

🎯 Demonstrate your ability to work in unstructured, evolving IT environments by citing a specific transformation or change initiative you led without a defined playbook.

5

🤝 Include a brief line on process and documentation ownership — e.g. 'Authored and maintained IT runbooks covering 12 operational procedures' — as the advert specifically mentions this as a valued skill.

Dear Hiring Manager,

HW Select Ltd's IT Manager role stands out precisely because it demands hands-on service provider oversight alongside leadership of a distributed internal team — two areas where I have built a strong track record. My experience spans Azure and Office 365 environments, vendor performance reviews, and keeping IT operations running smoothly across multiple time zones.

My background in IT operations management includes overseeing third-party service providers through structured review cycles, maintaining SLA compliance, and leading small internal IT teams across the UK and internationally. I am comfortable operating in evolving, unstructured environments and have developed process documentation that has improved consistency and reduced incident resolution times across distributed teams.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage IT operations in an unstructured or rapidly changing environment.

Situation: I joined a 200-person professional services firm mid-merger where IT processes were largely undocumented and two separate infrastructure stacks were in use. Task: I was asked to stabilise day-to-day IT operations while the integration roadmap was still being defined. Action: I ran a rapid audit of all active service providers, prioritised the 3 most business-critical systems, and introduced a lightweight incident tracking process using an existing Office 365 tenant. I also held weekly stand-ups with the 4-person internal team to surface blockers early. Result: Within 10 weeks, ticket resolution time dropped from an average of 4 days to 1.5 days and we had zero critical outages during the merger transition period.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to challenge or replace an underperforming IT service provider.

Situation: Our primary managed service provider was consistently missing SLA targets — averaging 68% on-time resolution against a contracted 90% — over two consecutive quarters. Task: As IT Operations Manager, I was responsible for the vendor relationship and needed to resolve the issue without disrupting a 150-user environment. Action: I compiled a performance dossier, presented findings to the vendor's account director, and issued a formal remediation notice with a 60-day improvement window. In parallel, I shortlisted two alternative providers. The incumbent failed to meet the revised targets. Result: I transitioned services to a new provider over 6 weeks with zero downtime, and SLA compliance rose to 94% within the first month of the new contract.
