STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a time when you had to manage challenging behaviour in a classroom

During a Year 9 mathematics lesson I was covering, three pupils became disruptive and refused to engage with the algebra worksheet. I calmly approached their table and acknowledged their frustration, then offered them a choice between completing the work independently or working with me in a smaller group. I moved them to a quieter area of the classroom and broke down the problems into smaller steps, using visual aids to make the concepts clearer. By the end of the lesson, all three pupils had completed the task and one even asked for additional practice questions. This experience reinforced the importance of staying calm and offering alternative approaches rather than confrontation.
2Question

Tell me about a situation where you helped raise a pupil's attainment

I worked with Sarah, a Year 10 pupil who was struggling with English comprehension and was predicted a grade 3. I identified that she had difficulty extracting key information from texts, so I created a structured approach using highlighters and question frameworks. Over 8 weeks, we met twice weekly for 30-minute sessions where I taught her to identify topic sentences and supporting evidence. I also liaised with her English teacher to ensure consistency in approach. By her mock exams, Sarah had improved to a grade 5 and felt much more confident tackling unseen texts. Her success motivated me to develop similar intervention strategies for other pupils.
