STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to support a pupil's changing needs

During a literacy session with a Year 4 pupil with autism, I noticed they became overwhelmed by the classroom noise and began showing signs of distress. I quickly adapted by moving them to a quiet corner with visual supports and simplified the task from writing a full paragraph to completing sentence starters. I also introduced a sensory break using their preferred fidget tool. Within 10 minutes, they were re-engaged and completed 4 sentences independently. This experience taught me the importance of reading non-verbal cues and having flexible strategies ready for immediate implementation.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work closely with teaching staff to support a challenging pupil

I worked with a class teacher to support a Year 5 pupil with SEMH needs who was frequently disrupting lessons through calling out and leaving their seat. We developed a joint behaviour plan involving visual cues, regular check-ins every 15 minutes, and a reward system for staying on task. I took responsibility for implementing the check-ins while the teacher managed the visual cues. Over 6 weeks, the pupil's disruptive incidents decreased from 12 per day to just 2, and their academic engagement improved significantly. The collaborative approach was key to achieving consistent boundaries across all interactions.
