STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult delivery situation

I was delivering construction materials to a tight city centre site when I discovered the access road was blocked by roadworks. The customer needed the materials that day for their project timeline. I contacted the site manager immediately and suggested an alternative delivery point 200 metres away. I then used the HIAB to carefully position the materials over a fence into their compound, working with their team to ensure safe placement. The delivery was completed 2 hours later than scheduled, but the customer appreciated my problem-solving approach and we maintained the project timeline.
2Question

How do you ensure you maintain punctuality when facing traffic delays?

I always plan my routes the evening before using traffic apps and check for any planned roadworks or events. I build in 15-minute buffers between deliveries and start 30 minutes earlier than the minimum required time. When I encountered a 45-minute delay due to an accident on the M4, I immediately called all affected customers to update them on revised arrival times. I also rearranged the delivery sequence to minimise total delays. This proactive communication meant customers could adjust their schedules, and I still completed 8 out of 10 deliveries within the original timeframes.
