STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult delivery situation

I was delivering construction materials to a site in Bristol when the access road was blocked by roadworks. The customer needed the materials that day for a concrete pour scheduled the next morning. I contacted the site manager to discuss alternative access routes and discovered a rear entrance through an industrial estate. I carefully manoeuvred the HGV through the narrow route and used the HIAB to place materials exactly where needed, completing the delivery 2 hours later than planned but ensuring the customer's project stayed on schedule.
2Question

How do you handle working independently without direct supervision?

During my previous role covering a 50-mile delivery radius, I managed my own daily schedule and route planning. I developed a system of checking delivery notes each morning, planning the most efficient routes using traffic apps, and conducting thorough vehicle checks before starting. When unexpected issues arose, like a customer being unavailable, I would contact the office immediately and suggest alternative delivery slots. This approach resulted in completing 95% of deliveries on the first attempt and maintaining excellent customer feedback scores.
