STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you supported someone during a difficult period

A family came to arrange their mother's funeral but were overwhelmed by the decisions required. I recognised their distress and took extra time to explain each option clearly, providing gentle guidance without pressure. I arranged for them to return the following day after discussing as a family, and prepared a summary document of their preferences. When they returned, they felt more confident and grateful for the patient support. The funeral proceeded smoothly, and they later sent a thank you card mentioning how my understanding approach helped them through an impossible time.
2Question

Describe a situation where attention to detail was crucial

I was finalising arrangements for a large funeral service involving multiple third parties including florists, caterers, and transport providers. I created a detailed timeline spreadsheet tracking every element from 8am setup through to 4pm reception. Two days before the service, I noticed the florist's delivery time conflicted with the hearse arrival. I immediately contacted both parties and rescheduled the flowers for 30 minutes earlier. This prevented potential delays and ensured the family's day proceeded without stress, demonstrating how thorough planning protects families during vulnerable moments.
