STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you went out of your way to help a customer and what the outcome was.

Situation: During a busy evening round at my previous delivery job, I arrived at a customer's address to find an elderly resident who had slipped on her doorstep and was struggling to get back inside. Task: My priority was to ensure her safety before completing the rest of my round. Action: I helped her safely indoors, checked she was uninjured, and called her emergency contact as she requested. I then notified my depot manager of the short delay and adjusted my remaining route to make up the time. Result: I completed the round only 8 minutes behind schedule, the customer wrote a commendation to the company, and my manager cited the incident as an example of excellent customer care at our next team briefing.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage a high-pressure workload independently. How did you stay organised?

Situation: During a peak Christmas period at my last employer, our team was short-staffed and I was assigned a round 25% larger than usual — 48 drops instead of the standard 38. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries within the same 4-hour window without compromising accuracy. Action: Before leaving the depot I re-sequenced my drop list by postcode cluster to cut backtracking, flagged two addresses with access notes to avoid delays, and set timed reminders on my handheld device for each zone. Result: I completed all 48 drops with 6 minutes to spare, recorded zero failed deliveries, and received a 'well done' message from the depot manager at the end of the shift.
