Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Highlight any previous delivery or driving experience prominently at the top of your CV — the advert emphasises being 'the face of Tesco out on the road', so customer-facing driving roles are directly relevant.

2

📊 Quantify your delivery experience: e.g. 'Completed 25+ home deliveries per shift across a 40-mile radius with a 99% on-time rate'.

3

🎯 Mention your valid UK driving licence and any clean driving record explicitly, as these are non-negotiable prerequisites for a delivery driver role.

4

🤝 Include examples of handling customer queries or complaints on the doorstep — the advert stresses helping customers 'in all kinds of different ways', so interpersonal skills on the road matter.

5

🕐 Confirm your availability matches the advertised windows (Sun/Tue/Fri evenings and Sat afternoons) — noting your shift flexibility in a personal statement can differentiate your application.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers at the heart of every delivery is exactly the environment in which I thrive — which is why I am applying for the Customer Delivery Driver position at the Bolton Horwich Extra store. I bring hands-on experience in home delivery driving and a consistent record of delivering friendly, reliable service at the doorstep, two qualities your advert highlights as central to the role.

My background in delivery and customer-facing work has equipped me with strong route management skills and the ability to handle varied customer needs calmly and professionally. I hold a clean UK driving licence and am fully comfortable working independently across evening and weekend shift patterns, including the advertised Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday availability windows.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you went above and beyond to help a customer during a delivery.

Situation: During a busy Saturday shift, I arrived at an elderly customer's address to find she was struggling to carry her shopping inside after a recent hip operation. Task: My delivery schedule had 6 more stops, but leaving her without assistance wasn't an option. Action: I carried all 4 bags through to her kitchen, checked she had everything she needed, and radioed my depot to flag a 10-minute delay. I also noted her address for a welfare check flag. Result: The customer called the store to praise the service, and my manager shared the feedback with the whole team. I completed the remaining deliveries only 8 minutes behind schedule.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage a heavy workload under time pressure — how did you cope?

Situation: During the Christmas period, our depot was short-staffed and I was assigned 34 deliveries in a single shift — 20% more than usual. Task: I needed to complete all drops within the 2-hour customer time slots without compromising service quality. Action: I reorganised my route using the onboard sat-nav to cluster nearby addresses, cutting unnecessary backtracking by roughly 12 miles. I also pre-sorted the van at the depot to reduce time at each door. Result: I completed all 34 deliveries on time, with only one customer needing a revised slot, and received a 5-star rating from 18 of the 20 customers who left feedback that day.
