STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a situation where you turned a frustrated customer into a satisfied one at their doorstep.

Situation: During a busy Saturday shift I arrived at a customer's address to find that two of her five items had been substituted with different brands, and she was visibly unhappy. Task: I needed to resolve her concern quickly without delaying the remaining 22 deliveries on my round. Action: I calmly walked her through each substitution, explained the reason for the change, and immediately processed a refund on the spot for the item she did not want to keep. I also noted her preferences on the system for future orders. Result: She thanked me before I left, and the store received a five-star customer feedback rating linked to that delivery the following day.
2Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage your time carefully to meet multiple deadlines in one shift.

Situation: On a Friday afternoon I was assigned 30 deliveries across two postcodes, but a 20-minute road closure added unexpected delay after my eighth stop. Task: I had to reorganise the remaining route to protect the time slots of customers who had specifically requested early delivery windows. Action: I reordered my remaining stops using the in-van sat-nav, prioritised the three customers with the earliest slots, and contacted the depot to flag the delay so they could send proactive messages to affected customers. Result: I completed all 30 deliveries within their agreed windows, finishing only 11 minutes later than the original schedule with no customer complaints recorded.
