Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers at the heart of every interaction is exactly what draws me to the Customer Delivery Driver role at the Enniskillen Superstore. With a valid UK driving licence and a proven track record in customer-facing, delivery-based work, I am confident I can represent Tesco professionally on every round — delivering groceries and great service in equal measure.

My background in driving and customer service roles has equipped me with strong route management skills and the ability to handle a high volume of drops efficiently while maintaining a friendly, helpful manner at each doorstep. I am comfortable working independently during shifts and equally at ease coordinating with a base team when needed.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you went above and beyond to help a customer.

Situation: While working as a delivery driver for a local grocery firm, I arrived at an elderly customer's address and noticed she was struggling to carry her previous delivery inside. Task: My job was simply to deliver the new order and move on to the next drop, but I could see she needed more help. Action: I asked her permission, carried all 4 crates of shopping into her kitchen, and spent 3 minutes helping her locate a missing item from the previous order. I also flagged her address to the depot so future drivers were aware she may need extra time. Result: She called the depot to compliment the service, and my manager shared her feedback in the team briefing. I completed my remaining 28 drops on time that shift.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage your time carefully to meet multiple deadlines in one shift.

Situation: During a busy Saturday shift at a previous delivery job, our route planning system went offline 40 minutes into my round, leaving me with 22 remaining drops and no digital guidance. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries within the 4-hour window to avoid failed drops and customer complaints. Action: I pulled up a paper backup map kept in the van, reorganised the remaining drops by postcode cluster, and prioritised the 3 customers who had noted time-sensitive requirements in their order notes. I also called the depot to alert them and request a manual check-in every 30 minutes. Result: I completed all 22 drops with 15 minutes to spare and received no missed-delivery complaints for that round.
