STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered outstanding service to a customer in a challenging situation.

Situation: During a busy Saturday shift, I arrived at a customer's address to find that 4 items in their order had been substituted and 2 were missing entirely. The customer was visibly frustrated as the missing items included medication-adjacent products they needed that day. Task: I needed to resolve the situation calmly, maintain Tesco's service standards, and ensure the customer felt valued. Action: I walked the customer through each substitution clearly, offered a full refund on the missing items processed immediately via the handheld device, and flagged the issue to the store manager on my return. Result: The customer called the store to compliment the handling — the manager shared the feedback with the team the following morning.
2Question

Describe a time when you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Midway through a 20-drop delivery route, my sat-nav failed and a road closure diverted me away from 6 consecutive addresses in an unfamiliar area. Task: I had to reroute independently and protect the delivery time slots for all remaining customers. Action: I pulled over safely, used a maps app on my phone to rebuild the route in under 4 minutes, reordered the remaining drops by proximity, and contacted the two customers most at risk of a late delivery to give them an updated ETA. Result: I completed all 20 deliveries within their time slots, with only one running 8 minutes late — and that customer had already been informed and was appreciative of the update.
