4

🤝 Mention experience working independently on the road while staying accountable to a base team — the advert explicitly describes this working pattern.

5

🚐 Include any vehicle safety check or pre-drive inspection experience (e.g. HGV walkaround checks, van roadworthy checks) as the advert lists this as a core responsibility.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers at the heart of every delivery is what draws me to the Customer Delivery Driver role at your Aberdeen Extra store. With a clean UK driving licence held for over three years and hands-on experience in customer-facing delivery work, I am confident I can represent Tesco professionally at every doorstep — handling order substitutions clearly and ensuring every time slot is met.

My background in delivery and customer service has equipped me with the practical skills this role demands. In a previous role, I completed over 20 doorstep deliveries per shift, conducting pre-drive vehicle checks each morning and managing last-minute order changes with customers in a calm, reassuring manner. I am comfortable working independently on the road while staying closely connected to a base team.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service in a challenging situation.

Situation: During a busy Friday evening shift, I arrived at a customer's address to find that 4 items in their order had been substituted and 2 were missing entirely. The customer had guests arriving and was visibly stressed. Task: I needed to resolve the situation quickly while keeping the customer calm and maintaining trust in the service. Action: I calmly walked the customer through each substitution, explained the reasons, and immediately processed refunds for the 2 missing items on my handheld device. I also flagged the issue to the store team via radio so it could be logged. Result: The customer thanked me directly and left a 5-star feedback rating. The store manager highlighted the interaction in the next team briefing as a best-practice example.
2Question

Describe a time when you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Midway through a delivery route covering 18 stops, my sat-nav lost signal in a rural area and two addresses had incomplete postcodes on the manifest. Task: I had to complete the remaining 11 deliveries on time without support from the office, as the phone signal was also weak. Action: I used my knowledge of the local area, cross-referenced street names on a paper map I kept in the van, and reordered my remaining stops to minimise backtracking. I also left a calling card and called the customers once signal returned. Result: I completed all 18 deliveries within the scheduled time window, with zero failed deliveries recorded for that shift.
