1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to an unfamiliar situation

During my first week as a Cover Supervisor, I was asked to cover a Year 9 Science lesson on photosynthesis with just 10 minutes' notice. The regular teacher had left detailed notes, but I had limited science background. I quickly reviewed the materials, identified the key learning objectives, and adapted my approach to focus on practical activities rather than complex theory. I organised the 28 students into groups of 4 and used visual aids to explain the process. By the end of the lesson, 95% of students had completed the worksheet successfully, and several commented that they found the group approach helpful. The teacher later praised my initiative in making the content accessible.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour from young people

While covering a Year 8 English class, three students were consistently disrupting the lesson by talking loudly and refusing to engage with the poetry analysis task. I calmly approached their table and acknowledged their concerns about finding poetry 'boring'. Instead of confronting them directly, I offered them a choice: they could either complete the standard worksheet or create a modern rap version of the poem that demonstrated the same literary techniques. This gave them ownership while maintaining learning objectives. Two of the students chose the creative option and produced excellent work, while the third settled into the standard task. The class remained focused, and I was able to report positive engagement to the regular teacher.
