1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a challenging group of young people and how you maintained order.

Situation: During a Year 10 cover lesson at a Rotherham secondary school, the class of 28 students became disruptive within five minutes of the teacher leaving, with three students refusing to open the set work. Task: I needed to re-establish calm without escalating the situation or losing the rest of the class. Action: I calmly addressed the three students individually, redirected them using the school's behaviour script, and gave the wider class a clear two-minute settling expectation. I moved seating for one student who was influencing others. Result: Within ten minutes, 26 of the 28 students were on task. I logged the incident with the form tutor after the lesson, and no further escalation was needed.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to communicate a concern about a young person's welfare to a senior colleague.

Situation: During a lunchtime supervision session, a Year 9 student approached me and made a comment suggesting she was being bullied outside school, including online. Task: As the responsible adult present, I needed to handle the disclosure carefully and escalate it correctly. Action: I listened without making promises of confidentiality, reassured the student she had done the right thing by speaking up, and immediately after the session completed a written concern form and handed it to the Designated Safeguarding Lead before the end of the school day. Result: The DSL confirmed the concern was logged and a pastoral meeting was arranged within 48 hours. The student later told me she felt supported by how quickly the school had responded.
