1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a student who was disengaged from learning — what approach did you take and what was the outcome?

Situation: A Year 9 student I supported in Maths had become increasingly disengaged, refusing to attempt tasks and distracting peers. Task: My role was to re-engage him without disrupting the rest of the class. Action: I spoke with him quietly during a transition activity, identified that he felt the work was too difficult, and broke the lesson objective into three smaller steps with visual prompts I created overnight. I also liaised with the class teacher to adjust his worksheet difficulty for two weeks. Result: Within three weeks, he was completing 80% of tasks independently and his behaviour incidents dropped from roughly 4 per lesson to fewer than 1. His end-of-term assessment score improved by 18 marks.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage a difficult classroom dynamic while supporting a student. How did you maintain focus and calm?

Situation: During a Year 10 Science lesson, two students near the student I was supporting began arguing, causing the whole class to lose focus. Task: I needed to keep my student on task while the teacher addressed the disruption. Action: I calmly repositioned myself between my student and the disturbance, used a low voice to redirect her attention to the experiment worksheet, and offered a brief 2-minute structured task to anchor her focus. I avoided drawing attention to the incident and used pre-agreed non-verbal cues we had practised. Result: My student completed the full experiment write-up — one of only 4 in the class to do so that lesson — and later told her form tutor it was the first Science lesson she had felt 'actually okay' in months.
