1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to drive change in a resistant manufacturing environment

At my previous manufacturing role, I needed to implement new quality control procedures that 28 production staff initially resisted. The situation arose when our defect rate increased to 4.2%, costing £15,000 monthly in rework. I organised small group sessions to explain the business impact and involved team leaders in designing the new processes. I also created visual management boards showing daily quality metrics. After 6 weeks of consistent communication and involving staff in solution development, we achieved buy-in from 95% of the team. The result was a reduction in defects to 1.8% within 3 months, saving £9,600 monthly and improving team morale significantly.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a significant process improvement opportunity

During a routine value stream mapping exercise, I noticed our packaging line had 12 minutes of non-value-added time per cycle due to manual material handling. The task was to reduce cycle time whilst maintaining quality standards. I analysed the workflow and proposed installing automated conveyor systems and reorganising workstations. I presented a business case showing £45,000 investment would deliver £8,200 monthly savings. After gaining approval, I managed the 4-week implementation with minimal production disruption. The action resulted in 35% cycle time reduction, annual savings of £98,400, and improved ergonomics for 8 operators.
