1Question

Tell me about a time when you identified a critical defect that could have impacted product quality

During a routine last-off inspection of automotive brackets, I noticed hairline cracks in 12 units that had passed initial checks. The defect was subtle but could have caused catastrophic failure under stress. I immediately quarantined the batch of 240 units and traced the issue to a temperature variation in the heat treatment process. I documented the findings with photographs and measurements, then worked with engineering to adjust the furnace parameters. This prevented 240 potentially dangerous components from reaching customers and resulted in a process improvement that reduced similar defects by 85% over the following 6 months.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work with production teams to resolve a quality issue

Our injection moulding line was producing plastic housings with dimensional variations that exceeded tolerance by 0.8mm. Production was under pressure to meet a 3-day deadline for 2,000 units. I collaborated with the production supervisor and machine operators to identify that worn tooling was the root cause. Rather than stopping production entirely, we implemented hourly dimensional checks and adjusted machine parameters in real-time. I trained 4 operators on proper measurement techniques using digital calipers. This approach allowed us to complete the order on time whilst maintaining quality standards, and the proactive monitoring system we established reduced similar issues by 60% across all production lines.
