Silent Aire – Dublin

What you will do

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer to own and lead the commissioning strategy for liquid-cooled mechanical systems within next-generation data centre deployments. This role sits within a central commissioning function, responsible for developing commissioning methodology, authoring procedures, and ensuring consistent, high-quality execution across regional site teams.

The successful candidate will be a recognised technical authority in liquid cooling and mission-critical mechanical systems, with the credibility and experience to govern commissioning activity from design review through IST, client demonstration, and handover.

How you will do it

Commissioning Strategy & Technical Leadership

  • Provide design-for-commissioning input during early design and product development phases
  • Act as final technical authority for mechanical commissioning issues and risk resolution

Systems Scope

  • Direct-to-Chip (DTC) liquid cooling systems
  • Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs)
  • Facility and secondary heat rejection systems (dry coolers, chillers, plate heat exchangers)
  • Pumps, valves, pipework, filtration, water treatment
  • Leak detection and containment systems
  • Integration with IT thermal loads and controls

Procedure & Documentation Development

  • Author and maintain:
    • Mechanical commissioning plans
    • Pre-commissioning and flushing procedures
    • Pressure testing and leak testing scripts
    • Thermal performance and load validation test scripts
    • Define measurable pass/fail criteria for all mechanical systems

Site & Regional Team Oversight

  • Provide governance and technical oversight to regional mechanical commissioning teams
  • Audit commissioning execution for compliance with strategy and standards
  • Witness Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and critical onsite tests
  • Support regional teams with complex fault finding and system tuning

Integrated Testing & Handover

  • Collaborate with electrical and controls leads during:
    • Integrated Systems Testing (IST)
    • Failure-mode and redundancy testing
  • Support client demonstrations and formal handover
  • Ensure readiness for live IT load introduction

What we look for

  • 10+ years’ experience in mechanical commissioning of mission-critical facilities
  • Demonstrable experience commissioning liquid-cooled data centre systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Hydronic system design and commissioning
    • Controls and BMS / PLC interaction
    • Redundancy and failure-mode analysis
  • Experience working across multiple geographies with regional teams
  • Relevant engineering qualification (Mechanical Engineering or equivalent)
  • Calm and authoritative under pressure
  • Strong technical documentation skills
  • Pragmatic, outcome-focused approach to commissioning
  • Willingness to travel to support FATs and critical site activities
  • Able to challenge unsafe or non-compliant commissioning practices

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a time when you had to resolve a complex commissioning issue under pressure

During the commissioning of a 2MW liquid-cooled data centre, we discovered a 15% thermal performance shortfall just 3 days before client demonstration. The issue stemmed from incorrect coolant flow distribution across 24 server racks. I immediately assembled a cross-functional team including controls engineers and the design team. We identified that the Coolant Distribution Unit's flow balancing valves were incorrectly calibrated. I developed an emergency re-commissioning procedure, working 18-hour days to recalibrate all flow circuits. We achieved full thermal performance within 48 hours, allowing the client demonstration to proceed successfully and securing the £2.8M contract.
2Question

How do you ensure consistent quality when overseeing multiple regional teams?

When managing commissioning across 6 regional teams for a global data centre rollout, I established standardised governance processes. I created detailed commissioning checklists with 47 mandatory hold points and implemented weekly video audits of each team's progress. I also developed a peer review system where teams would cross-validate each other's test results. This approach identified 12 potential issues before they became problems, maintained 95% consistency across all regions, and reduced overall commissioning time by 20% through shared learnings and best practices.
