  • Define: Energisation sequences, Safety and control philosophies, Failure-mode and recovery testing scenarios
  • Act as escalation point for all electrical commissioning risks and issues

Systems Scope

  • MV / LV power distribution
  • UPS systems (static and/or rotary)
  • Standby generation and fuel systems
  • ATS / STS / switchgear
  • Busways and rack power distribution
  • Earthing and bonding systems
  • EPMS / SCADA integration

Procedure & Test Development

  • Author and approve:
    • Electrical commissioning scripts
    • Black-building and power restoration tests
    • Load bank and live IT load testing procedures
  • Define acceptance criteria aligned to uptime, redundancy, and safety requirements

Site & Regional Oversight

  • Govern commissioning execution carried out by regional electrical teams
  • Review method statements, switching plans, and test documentation
  • Witness critical energisation, power-failure testing, and integrated tests
  • Ensure consistent commissioning quality across regions and projects

Integrated Systems Testing (IST)

  • Lead electrical contribution to IST events
  • Coordinate with mechanical commissioning on:
    • Power failure impacts to CDUs and cooling systems
    • Control system fail-safe behaviours
  • Support client-witnessed testing and operational demonstrations

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure safe systems of work for HV/LV activities
  • Enforce lock-out/tag-out, switching authority, and permit procedures
  • Promote a strong safety culture within commissioning environments

What we look for

  • 10+ years’ experience commissioning critical power systems for data centres
  • Proven experience delivering Tier III / Tier IV or hyperscale facilities
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Electrical failure modes and redundancy testing
    • Load progression and ramp-up strategies
    • SCADA / EPMS monitoring and alarming
  • Relevant electrical engineering qualification
  • HV authorisation or equivalent experience highly desirable
  • Decisive, safety-led mindset
  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Excellent technical writing and procedural clarity
  • Comfortable challenging project pressure when systems are not ready
  • Willingness to travel for FATs, IST, and critical onsite activities

Dear Hiring Manager,

Silent Aire's focus on advanced liquid-cooled data centre infrastructure represents exactly the technical challenge I'm seeking in my next commissioning leadership role. With over 10 years commissioning critical power systems and proven experience delivering Tier III/IV facilities, I am well-positioned to develop your electrical commissioning strategy and govern execution across regional deployments.

My background in leading multi-regional commissioning teams, combined with extensive experience in MV/LV power distribution, UPS systems, and SCADA integration, aligns perfectly with your requirements for this senior position. I have successfully coordinated electrical and mechanical systems integration, particularly in high-density environments requiring precise failure-mode testing and recovery procedures.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to challenge project pressure when systems weren't ready

During a Tier III data centre commissioning in Manchester, the project team pressured me to energise the MV switchgear despite incomplete earthing verification. I refused to proceed, explaining that energising without proper earthing could cause catastrophic failure and endanger the 15-person commissioning team. I escalated to the project director, presenting a detailed risk assessment showing potential £2.8M equipment damage and 6-week delay if we proceeded unsafely. The team completed earthing verification over the next 48 hours, and we successfully energised with zero incidents, maintaining our 99.9% safety record.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage commissioning quality across multiple regions

While leading commissioning for a hyperscale client across 5 European sites, I discovered inconsistent UPS testing procedures between our London and Frankfurt teams. The Frankfurt team was skipping load progression tests, creating potential reliability issues. I immediately implemented standardised commissioning scripts and conducted virtual training sessions for all 28 regional engineers. I then travelled to Frankfurt to witness their next UPS commissioning, ensuring compliance with our Tier IV standards. This intervention prevented potential downtime issues and maintained consistent 99.95% uptime across all sites.
