STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to work under pressure to meet delivery deadlines

During a particularly busy Christmas period, our depot received 40% more parcels than usual, and three drivers called in sick. I volunteered to extend my shift and take on additional routes covering 25 extra delivery points across Cambridgeshire. I reorganised my route planning to group deliveries by postcode, which saved 90 minutes of driving time. Despite the pressure, I completed all 85 deliveries within the 10-hour window, ensuring customers received their parcels on time. The depot manager praised my initiative, and this experience led to me being considered for route planning training.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified and reported a vehicle defect

During my pre-journey inspection of an Iveco Stralis, I noticed the rear brake lights were flickering intermittently when tested. Although they appeared to work initially, I recognised this could be a wiring fault that might fail completely during the night shift. I immediately reported the defect to the transport office and completed a detailed defect report form. The vehicle was taken off the road, and the workshop confirmed a loose connection that could have caused complete brake light failure. My thorough inspection prevented a potential traffic violation and safety incident, demonstrating the importance of proper vehicle checks.
