STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to complete work to a tight deadline

I was assigned to complete a 3-bedroom void property that needed to be ready for new tenants within 4 days instead of the usual 7. The property required new kitchen units, bathroom plumbing repairs, and full redecorating. I created a detailed schedule, starting with plumbing repairs on day 1, carpentry work on day 2, and decorating over days 3-4. By working extended hours and coordinating with the materials supplier for early morning deliveries, I completed the void 6 hours ahead of schedule. The property passed inspection first time and the new tenants moved in as planned, avoiding any rental income loss for the housing association.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult customer during property maintenance

While completing void repairs, a neighbour complained about noise levels and questioned the quality of my work. Rather than becoming defensive, I took time to explain the repair schedule and showed them the high standard of work being completed. I adjusted my working hours to start 30 minutes later to respect their concerns about early morning noise. I also provided regular updates on progress and completion timescales. By the end of the week, they complimented the transformation of the property and thanked me for my professional approach. This experience taught me that clear communication and flexibility can turn challenging situations into positive relationships.
