STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to work independently on a challenging repair job

At a manufacturing facility, I discovered extensive water damage behind kitchen wall tiles during routine maintenance. The situation required immediate carpentry repairs to replace damaged timber framework, followed by replastering and retiling within 48 hours to prevent production disruption. I coordinated with the site manager to work outside normal hours, sourced matching materials from 3 suppliers, and completed the repair in 36 hours. The client avoided £8,000 in lost production time and praised my proactive communication throughout the emergency repair.
2Question

How do you manage your time when travelling between multiple client sites?

I use route planning software to optimise travel between 6-8 daily client visits across a 35-mile patch. Each morning, I review job priorities and group geographically close sites together, allowing 45 minutes travel time between locations. I maintain a mobile toolkit inventory and pre-order materials to local suppliers near each site. This system increased my completed jobs from 5 to 8 per day while reducing fuel costs by 22%. Clients appreciate the reliable scheduling and I consistently meet promised arrival times within 15-minute windows.
