STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to work to a tight deadline on a maintenance project

Last year, I had to complete an emergency kitchen installation for a council tenant whose kitchen had flood damage. The family needed to return within 48 hours. I coordinated with the plumber to complete pipework on day one while I prepared the units. On day two, I fitted the kitchen units, completed the tiling backsplash, and did touch-up decorating. Despite the pressure, I delivered a fully functional kitchen on time, and the tenant praised the quality of workmanship. This experience reinforced my ability to manage multiple trades efficiently under pressure.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult customer during property work

I was doing maintenance work at a local authority property where the tenant was unhappy about the disruption to their daily routine. They were particularly concerned about dust from patch plastering affecting their furniture. I listened to their concerns, explained each step of my process, and offered to cover their furniture with protective sheets. I also adjusted my schedule to work around their needs, completing the noisier carpentry work when they were out. By the end, they thanked me for being considerate and professional, and even recommended me to their neighbour for similar work.
