1Question

Tell me about a time you had to mentor a junior care assistant

When I was assigned to mentor Sarah, a newly qualified care assistant, she was struggling with medication administration confidence during her first month. I identified that she needed hands-on support rather than just verbal instruction. I arranged to shadow her on 8 client visits over 2 weeks, demonstrating proper medication protocols and documentation. I also created a simple checklist for her to follow until the processes became second nature. Within 6 weeks, Sarah's medication accuracy improved from 78% to 96%, and she reported feeling much more confident. The experience taught me that effective mentoring requires adapting your approach to each individual's learning style.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build trust with a difficult client

I was assigned to care for Mr. Thompson, an 82-year-old gentleman who had refused care from 3 previous assistants, calling them 'interfering busybodies'. During my first visit, he was hostile and wouldn't let me help with personal care. Instead of pushing, I spent 20 minutes just talking about his garden, which I noticed was his pride and joy. Over the next week, I brought him seed catalogues and asked his advice about my own plants. This approach gradually broke down his barriers. Within 3 weeks, he was accepting full personal care support and even looked forward to my visits. Building that initial connection through his interests was key to establishing the trust needed for effective care delivery.
