STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage underperforming care staff

I had a care assistant who was consistently late with medication rounds, affecting 8 residents' care schedules. I arranged a private meeting to understand the root cause, discovering she was struggling with time management due to thorough documentation habits. I implemented a buddy system pairing her with an experienced colleague for 2 weeks, provided additional time management training, and adjusted her initial workload. Within 3 weeks, her punctuality improved to 98% and resident feedback scores increased from 3.2 to 4.6 out of 5. This approach maintained our CQC standards while supporting staff development.
2Question

Describe a situation where you improved care quality in a residential setting

I noticed our dementia residents were experiencing increased agitation during evening meals, with 6 incidents per week on average. I analysed the environment and identified that bright lighting and background noise were triggers. I introduced a new evening routine with dimmed lighting, classical music, and staggered meal times for smaller groups of 4 residents. Within 6 weeks, behavioural incidents dropped to 1 per week, and family satisfaction scores improved from 7.2 to 9.1 out of 10. The approach was adopted home-wide and shared with our sister facilities.
