Dear Hiring Manager,

Prospero Teaching's Business Studies ECT vacancy at your Grays secondary school is precisely the role I have been preparing for throughout my initial teacher training. Having developed strong subject knowledge across Business and Economics alongside practical experience delivering KS4 lessons, I am confident in my ability to bring real-world entrepreneurial thinking into the classroom from September 2026.

My background in Business Studies teaching has equipped me with the skills to plan differentiated lessons, use formative assessment to close attainment gaps, and contribute meaningfully to curriculum development. I have actively engaged with CPD opportunities during my ITT and worked closely with mentors to refine my pedagogy — making me well-placed to benefit from the structured ECT induction programme you offer.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you received feedback on your teaching during your ITT and how you acted on it.

Situation: During my second placement, my mentor observed a KS4 Business lesson and noted that my questioning technique was not stretching the higher-attaining students sufficiently. Task: I needed to redesign my questioning approach within two weeks before the next formal observation. Action: I researched Bloom's Taxonomy questioning frameworks, created a tiered question bank for each lesson, and practised cold-calling techniques to ensure all ability levels were challenged. I also attended a departmental CPD session on assessment for learning. Result: My follow-up observation received a 'Good with Outstanding features' grading, and my mentor noted a marked improvement in the depth of student responses across the class of 27.
2Question

Give an example of how you have supported a student who was struggling to engage with the subject matter.

Situation: A Year 10 student in my Business Studies class was consistently disengaged and scoring below 40% in formative assessments, despite showing strong verbal contributions occasionally. Task: I needed to identify the barrier and adapt my approach without disrupting the rest of the class. Action: I arranged a brief one-to-one conversation during a form period and discovered the student found written tasks overwhelming. I introduced structured writing frames and paired him with a peer for collaborative tasks. I also linked Business content to his interest in football club management to increase relevance. Result: Over six weeks, his assessment scores rose from 38% to 61%, and his attendance to my lessons improved from 70% to 95%.
