STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to build a relationship with a difficult customer

Situation: I had a regular customer who was consistently unhappy with delivery timing, often complaining about late arrivals affecting their business. Task: I needed to rebuild trust and improve our service relationship to retain this important account. Action: I arranged to meet with them personally to understand their specific needs, discovered they needed deliveries before 9am for their breakfast service, and worked with dispatch to prioritise their route. I also started providing them with accurate delivery windows via text updates. Result: Within 4 weeks, their complaints stopped entirely and they increased their weekly order value by 25%, even recommending our service to 3 other local businesses.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work weekends or unsociable hours

Situation: During a busy Christmas period, our depot was short-staffed and weekend deliveries were backing up, risking customer satisfaction. Task: I volunteered to work both Saturday and Sunday for 3 consecutive weekends to help clear the backlog. Action: I adjusted my personal schedule, communicated with my family about the temporary change, and maintained my usual delivery standards despite the longer hours. I completed 18 extra deliveries each weekend day. Result: We cleared the backlog completely, received commendations from 8 customers for reliable service during the busy period, and I earned £840 in overtime pay while demonstrating my commitment to the team.
