STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a difficult delivery situation — for example, a customer complaint or access issue.

Situation: On a busy Monday morning route covering 22 drops, I arrived at a cash-and-carry customer to find their loading bay blocked by a contractor's van, with no staff available to move it. Task: I needed to complete the delivery without delaying the remaining 18 stops on my schedule. Action: I contacted my depot controller immediately, then spoke calmly with the customer's manager to arrange a temporary unloading point at the side entrance. I manually moved 14 cages of stock using a sack truck within 25 minutes. Result: The delivery was completed with only a 10-minute delay, the customer praised the flexibility, and I finished my full route on time that day.
2Question

Describe a time when you had to manage your time effectively to complete all deliveries on a busy shift.

Situation: During a pre-Christmas period, my usual 20-drop route was extended to 28 drops due to a colleague's absence. Task: I had to complete all deliveries within the standard 10-hour shift window. Action: I reviewed the full manifest before departure, reordered three stops to reduce backtracking by roughly 12 miles, and communicated estimated arrival times to two customers who had tight receiving windows. I also minimised cab time by preparing paperwork at each stop while the tail-lift operated. Result: I completed all 28 deliveries by 17:30, 30 minutes inside the shift window, with no customer complaints and accurate paperwork on every drop.
