STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to adapt quickly to a challenging classroom situation

During a Year 2 science lesson about plants, our planned outdoor investigation was cancelled due to sudden heavy rain. I quickly adapted by creating an indoor 'plant hospital' activity where pupils diagnosed problems with classroom plants using magnifying glasses. I divided the 26 pupils into pairs, giving each team a different plant specimen and observation sheets. Within 10 minutes, the children were fully engaged, making detailed observations and discussing their findings. The lesson achieved all learning objectives, and pupil feedback showed 95% found it more engaging than the original outdoor plan. This experience taught me the importance of having flexible backup activities that maintain learning momentum.
2Question

Describe how you've collaborated with colleagues to improve pupil outcomes

I worked with 4 Key Stage 1 teachers to address declining reading comprehension scores across Year 1 and 2. We analysed assessment data showing 23% of pupils were below expected levels. I proposed implementing shared guided reading sessions where we rotated teaching different ability groups across classes. Over 8 weeks, I led the higher-ability group focusing on inference skills, while colleagues targeted phonics and fluency. We met weekly to share progress and adjust strategies. By term end, comprehension scores improved by 18% overall, with the most significant gains in our targeted intervention groups. This collaborative approach became our standard practice for addressing learning gaps.
