1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt your research approach for a challenging stakeholder

During a government portal redesign project, the department head initially resisted user testing, believing their internal team knew user needs. I proposed a compromise: a small-scale pilot with 8 users from their existing database. The results revealed a 65% task failure rate on their priority user journey. I presented these findings with specific user quotes and video clips showing frustration points. This evidence convinced the stakeholder to approve a full research programme with 40 participants, ultimately leading to a redesign that improved completion rates by 42% and saved the department £180,000 in support costs.
2Question

Describe a situation where your user research findings contradicted client expectations

A local council assumed citizens wanted a mobile-first approach for their benefits application system. However, my research with 25 users revealed that 78% preferred desktop due to the complex documentation required. Many users lacked reliable mobile data and needed to access multiple files simultaneously. I presented this data alongside user journey maps showing the pain points. Initially disappointed, the client agreed to prioritise desktop optimisation. The final solution achieved 89% successful applications compared to their previous 34% mobile completion rate, validating the research-driven approach.
