  • Designing and adapting lesson plans to meet individual needs, including EHCP and PEP targets

  • Encouraging engagement, confidence, and motivation through supportive teaching approaches

  • Working closely with Virtual Schools, carers, social workers, and education settings to ensure joined-up support

The Ideal Candidate

We are keen to hear from individuals who:

  • Have experience teaching, tutoring, or supporting vulnerable young people, particularly those in care or with SEMH needs

  • Are understanding of the unique challenges faced by children in the care system

  • Can adapt their teaching methods to suit different abilities and learning styles

  • Are patient, reliable, and committed to helping young people succeed

  • Hold a full UK driving licence and have access to a vehicle to travel across North Yorkshire

A teaching qualification such as QTS or QTLS would be advantageous but is not essential. We welcome applicants with relevant experience and a strong commitment to supporting young people.

  • Support from a friendly and highly experienced team

  • The chance to work with a variety of learners in rewarding settings

1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a vulnerable young person who was struggling with education

I worked with a 14-year-old in foster care who had missed 8 months of schooling due to placement changes. Initially, he refused to engage with any academic work and had severe anxiety about Maths. I started with 20-minute sessions focusing on building trust rather than curriculum content. I used practical examples like calculating gaming scores to make Maths relevant to his interests. Over 12 weeks, I gradually increased session length and introduced formal learning objectives. By the end of term, he was completing full hour sessions and had progressed from Entry Level 2 to Level 1 in Maths, giving him confidence to return to mainstream education.
2Question

How would you handle a situation where a student becomes upset during a tutoring session?

During a session with a 15-year-old Looked After Child, she became distressed when struggling with fractions, saying she was 'stupid like everyone says'. I immediately stopped the academic work and acknowledged her feelings without dismissing them. I gave her space to calm down and offered a drink of water. Once she was ready, I shared examples of other students who had overcome similar challenges and reminded her of her recent progress in English comprehension. I suggested we end the Maths early and spend 10 minutes on something she enjoyed - creative writing. This approach helped her leave feeling positive, and she returned the following week more willing to tackle challenging topics.
