STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you took the lead on a shift and had to resolve an unexpected problem quickly.

Situation: During a Saturday morning shift at a busy café, our coffee machine developed a fault 20 minutes before the peak rush, leaving us with one working group head. Task: As the senior team member on shift, I needed to keep service running and manage customer expectations. Action: I immediately reorganised the team of 6, assigning two baristas to the working head and redirecting others to handle food prep and till operations. I communicated wait times honestly to customers and offered complimentary pastries to those waiting over 10 minutes. Result: We maintained service throughout the 90-minute rush, served approximately 180 customers, and received no formal complaints. The machine was repaired by a technician within 2 hours.
2Question

Describe a situation where you coached a colleague to improve their performance — what approach did you take and what was the outcome?

Situation: A new barista on my team was consistently producing espresso shots outside the correct extraction time, which was affecting drink quality scores. Task: I needed to address this constructively without undermining their confidence during their first month. Action: I arranged a 15-minute one-to-one after their shift, using our coffee excellence checklist as a reference point rather than personal criticism. I demonstrated the correct technique, then observed them practise 3 times and gave specific feedback each time. Result: Within two weeks, their espresso consistency improved noticeably, and our store's monthly coffee excellence score rose from 78% to 89%. The barista went on to pass their accreditation assessment first time.
