1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a child overcome a learning challenge

During my volunteer work at a local youth centre, I worked with a 7-year-old who struggled with basic numeracy. The situation required patience as he became frustrated easily and would shut down during maths activities. I developed a task using football cards to make numbers more engaging, breaking down addition into small steps using his favourite players' statistics. Over 6 weeks, I spent 30 minutes twice weekly working through these exercises. The result was remarkable - he progressed from counting on fingers to mental addition up to 20, and his confidence grew significantly. His teacher noticed the improvement in classroom maths lessons, and he started volunteering answers for the first time.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage difficult behaviour from a young person

While coaching an under-10s football team, I encountered a player who frequently disrupted training by arguing with teammates and refusing to follow instructions. The situation was affecting team morale and other children's enjoyment. I took time to speak with him privately, discovering he was struggling with changes at home and acting out for attention. I implemented a system where he became my 'assistant coach' for warm-ups, giving him responsibility and positive attention. I also established clear boundaries with consistent consequences. Within 3 weeks, his disruptive behaviour reduced by 80%, and he became one of the most helpful team members. The approach taught me that understanding the root cause is crucial for managing challenging behaviour effectively.
