1Question

Tell me about a time when you helped a child with ASC overcome a learning barrier

A Year 3 pupil with ASC was struggling with maths transitions, becoming distressed when moving between addition and subtraction tasks. I created a visual schedule with 5-minute warning cards and introduced a sensory break routine between topics. I worked with the class teacher to implement this strategy consistently over 4 weeks. The result was a 60% reduction in meltdowns during maths lessons, and the pupil began completing 8 out of 10 transition activities independently, significantly improving their learning engagement and mathematical progress.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain calm under pressure with a challenging pupil

During a particularly busy afternoon, a Year 2 pupil with ASC became overwhelmed by classroom noise and began hitting other children. I immediately used calm, low voice techniques and guided them to our designated quiet space. I implemented their personalised de-escalation strategy involving deep breathing and their comfort object. Within 12 minutes, the pupil had regulated their emotions and was able to rejoin group activities. This incident reinforced the importance of consistent routines and having personalised strategies readily available for each pupil's specific needs.
