STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a child with SEND overcome a learning challenge

I worked with a Year 2 pupil with ASD who struggled with maths transitions. The situation required immediate intervention as he would have meltdowns when moving between addition and subtraction tasks. I created a visual timetable with 5-minute warning cards and introduced a 'maths bridge' activity using his special interest in trains. Over 4 weeks, I gradually reduced the transition time from 10 minutes to 2 minutes. The result was remarkable - his maths engagement improved by 80% and he completed 95% of tasks without distress, allowing him to progress with his EHCP targets ahead of schedule.
2Question

How do you handle emotional outbursts from children with additional needs?

I encountered this with a Year 1 pupil with ADHD who had daily emotional outbursts during group activities. The task was to help him regulate his emotions while maintaining classroom harmony. I implemented a 'calm corner' strategy with sensory tools and worked with the SENCO to identify his triggers - usually overstimulation from noise. I introduced noise-cancelling headphones and a traffic light system for self-regulation. Within 6 weeks, his outbursts reduced from 8 per day to 1 per week, and his participation in group work increased by 70%, significantly improving his social development outcomes.
