STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected situation in a classroom or group setting.

Situation: I arrived at a secondary school for a cover lesson to find the planned resources were unavailable and the class had already been unsettled by a previous incident that morning. Task: I needed to restore calm and deliver a productive 60-minute lesson with no prepared materials. Action: I drew on my knowledge of the year group — Year 9 English — and led a structured discussion activity around a short text I recalled, using pair work to re-engage the class and setting clear behavioural expectations within the first five minutes. Result: The class settled within ten minutes, completed the activity, and the head of year commented that it was one of the most orderly cover lessons that group had experienced that term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you managed challenging behaviour from a young person — what did you do and what was the outcome?

Situation: During a supply placement at a Swindon secondary school, a Year 10 pupil became verbally disruptive midway through a maths cover lesson, refusing to engage and distracting 28 other students. Task: I needed to de-escalate without removing the pupil from the room or disrupting the rest of the class. Action: I calmly approached the pupil, lowered my voice, and gave them a specific, achievable task separate from the group while acknowledging their frustration privately. I maintained consistent, non-confrontational language and checked in twice more during the lesson. Result: The pupil completed three questions independently by the end of the session, and the class teacher noted the approach in a written commendation passed to the supply agency.
