1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected classroom situation

During a Year 2 supply day, I arrived to find the planned science lesson required equipment that wasn't available due to a water leak in the store cupboard. I quickly assessed the learning objective about materials and their properties, then adapted the lesson using classroom resources. I created hands-on sorting activities using books, pencils, and furniture, turning it into an engaging investigation. The children explored hard/soft and rough/smooth textures around the room. The class teacher later commented that the pupils retained the concepts better than previous years, and I received a request to return the following week.
2Question

Describe how you build rapport with pupils when you're only with them for a short time

When covering a Year 5 class for 3 days, I started each morning with a 'mystery teacher' game where pupils could ask me questions to discover interesting facts about my background. I shared that I'd taught in 12 different schools and asked them to guess which subjects I enjoyed most as a pupil. This created immediate engagement and curiosity. I also learned 5 pupils' names each hour, using their interests to connect learning to their experiences. By day 2, behaviour incidents dropped from 8 to 2, and several pupils asked if I'd be their permanent teacher. The approach helped create a positive learning environment despite the short timeframe.
