1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a challenging classroom situation

I arrived at a Year 4 class to find 28 students with no lesson plans due to the teacher's sudden illness. The class had a reputation for challenging behaviour. I quickly assessed the situation by speaking with the teaching assistant and reviewing the weekly timetable. I implemented a structured morning routine using interactive whiteboard activities while gathering information about individual students' needs. I adapted a literacy lesson using familiar characters from their current class novel, incorporating movement breaks every 20 minutes. By lunchtime, the class was settled and engaged, with the head teacher commenting on the positive atmosphere. This experience taught me the importance of quick assessment and flexible planning in supply teaching.
2Question

How do you handle working with minimal information about students' individual needs?

During a three-day placement at a Year 2 class, I had limited handover information about students with additional needs. I began by observing student interactions during the first morning activities, noting any patterns or challenges. I discreetly spoke with the teaching assistant during break time to understand key support strategies for 4 students with SEND requirements. I implemented visual timetables and clear instructions, while providing additional scaffolding for those who needed it. I maintained detailed notes throughout each day, sharing observations with the regular teacher upon their return. This approach resulted in smooth lesson delivery and positive feedback from both students and staff, demonstrating my ability to work effectively with limited information.
