1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt your teaching style quickly to meet the needs of a class you had never taught before.

Situation: I arrived at a Leeds primary school for a day's supply cover in a Reception class of 29 children. The class teacher had left minimal notes and the group included three children with English as an additional language. Task: I needed to deliver the morning phonics session and manage continuous provision for the afternoon with no prior briefing. Action: I spent the first ten minutes observing the children at free play to gauge their communication levels, then simplified my phonics delivery using visual props I found in the resource cupboard. I paired EAL children with confident peers during group activities. Result: The SENCO commented at the end of the day that the session had run more smoothly than expected, and I was re-booked for two further days that half-term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a safeguarding concern in an early years setting and explain the steps you took.

Situation: During a supply placement at a nursery in West Yorkshire, I noticed a three-year-old arriving with unexplained bruising on their forearm on two consecutive mornings. Task: As the supply teacher, I needed to act within the setting's safeguarding procedures without overstepping my role or alarming the child. Action: I calmly documented my observations with timestamps in the school's safeguarding log and immediately reported my concerns to the designated safeguarding lead before the morning session began. I ensured the child felt safe and included throughout the day without drawing attention to the situation. Result: The DSL confirmed the concern was escalated to the local authority the same afternoon. I received written acknowledgement that my prompt reporting had followed correct procedure.
