STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to present a difficult case in court

I was presenting a complex Domestic Violence Protection Order where the respondent was self-represented and highly confrontational. The situation required careful preparation as the victim was vulnerable and the evidence included multiple police incident reports spanning 8 months. I prepared comprehensive witness statements and organised the evidence chronologically to present a clear narrative. During the hearing, I maintained professional composure while the respondent repeatedly interrupted, ensuring the magistrates understood the severity through factual presentation rather than emotional argument. The order was granted for the full 28-day period, and the victim expressed relief that justice was served professionally and respectfully.
2Question

How do you handle working remotely while maintaining client relationships?

When our team transitioned to hybrid working, I had 25 active police cases requiring regular client contact. I established a structured communication system using secure video calls for case updates and maintained detailed case notes accessible remotely. I scheduled weekly check-ins with the police liaison officer and created digital case files that could be shared securely with all stakeholders. This approach actually improved efficiency as police officers could join calls from their stations rather than travelling to our office. Client satisfaction scores increased by 15% as they appreciated the flexibility and more frequent touchpoints throughout their cases.
