1Question

Tell me about a time you had to make a difficult decision on a high-profile case

When representing a council in a £280k commercial dispute, I discovered our client had potentially breached contract terms during disclosure. Despite pressure to continue, I advised immediate settlement negotiations. I presented three options to the cabinet: fight and risk £420k costs, settle at £180k, or seek mediation. I recommended mediation based on legal precedent analysis. The case settled at £95k within 6 weeks, saving the council £185k and avoiding negative publicity during election period.
2Question

Describe how you've mentored junior colleagues in your legal career

I mentored 4 trainee solicitors over 2 years, developing a structured programme covering case analysis, client communication and court preparation. I assigned each trainee to shadow 8 hearings, then gradually increased their responsibilities from document drafting to client meetings. One trainee struggled with employment tribunal advocacy, so I arranged mock tribunals and provided feedback on presentation style. All 4 trainees qualified successfully, with 3 receiving commendations. The programme was adopted firm-wide, improving trainee retention by 25%.
